There is a short-term solution to the electricity problem in Yangon and other major cities. The gas turbines that are parked in Yangon can be restarted. If these power plants can be restarted, they can generate about 500 megawatts. But to get those 500 megawatts, it will cost about $50 million a month. The military council knows about this solution. But because it needs dollars for military expenses, it is not in a position to spend that money on the people.
The problem of power outages is not new. It has been getting worse every year since the military took power. And even rich countries have long-term plans and invested a lot of money to solve this problem. So far, the military council has no short-term plan to solve this problem. So, if the current situation continues, even big cities will only have about 2 hours of electricity a day next summer, and by the summer of 2026, most parts of the country, including big cities, will not have access to electricity at all, except for Nay Pyi Taw, where the military council is headquartered.
