Some 74 youth were arrested by the regime’s armed forces at the entrance to Hpruso town in Kayah State on Friday evening, locals said.
They are reportedly being detained in a prison in the state capital of Loikaw.
Locals fear that the youth are suspected of having attended an anti-junta military training.
The young people, who are from across the state, were reportedly returning from a skills development course.
“We don’t know how the military heard the news that the youth were returning. They are always operating,” a local man told Myanmar Now.
A Kayah State-based youth told RFA on the condition of anonymity that the young people had been attending a summer leadership training set up by an ethnic armed organisation.
Khu Daniel, Secretary General 2 of the Karenni National Progressive Party (KNPP), an ethnic armed organisation, told local media outlet Kantarawaddy Times on Sunday that the training was not militant and that it had been organised by a regional-level organisation.
