After the Central Bank under the Military Council changed the dollar reference price from 1,850 kyats to 2,100 kyats, petrol prices jumped by five hundred kyats per liter within three days. When the military leader Min Aung Hlaing said to reduce the import of fuel from abroad, the situation got worse. To this day, prices are still rising.

In Yangon, we can only buy petrol in the morning at the big shops in Yangon. By evening, many gas stations run out of oil. In big cities, there is a shortage of fuel due to the increase in transportation costs. Even in a big city like Mandalay, only two big gas stations can sell it. All the rest of the shops are closed due to lack of oil. Since Mandalay is a motorcycle capital, the whole city is in trouble. In addition, we have been buying and using it for about 5,000 per liter from small black market shops. In Shan State and Putao, a liter is already close to ten thousand kyats.

The Military Council could no longer generate enough dollars to import fuel from abroad. Besides, entrepreneurs cannot buy dollars from the market and import them. Therefore, even though large oil tankers are arriving at Yangon port, there are no dollars to pay.
