US President Trump has announced that he will end the system that allows Burmese citizens to stay in the United States temporarily. The law will take effect in sixty days. It is estimated that there are about 4,000 people currently living in the United States under this system. Most of those who were unable to stay in Myanmar due to arrests by the military junta are now allowed to stay in the United States under this system. In other words, they are granted political asylum. Now their future is uncertain.
What is worse is that the reason for ending the system is said to be because the situation in Myanmar has improved and elections can be held. Civil society organizations criticize this reason as the US government itself is turning a blind eye to the real situation in Myanmar. Since the system has been abolished, those who have to leave the United States are still not sure which country they will cross into.
