The military council has arrested members of the Nam Lat Charity Association, which is helping with earthquake recovery efforts in Sagaing City, and confiscated the group’s car and earthquake relief supplies. All members were arrested on the grounds of the guest list. A day before the arrest, a military council official visited the monastery to inspect it.
At present, the people from Sagaing who came to work and the people from nearby areas have been released, but the rest who came to help from Yangon and Magway are still being arrested. Although the guest list is the reason, the founder and treasurer are still being sought as an excuse for not renewing the registration of the association.
The group has been helping with food distribution, debris clearance, and reconstruction in Sagaing City since the earthquake on March 28. It is true that the military council is arresting charitable organizations for various reasons. Other charitable organizations are also afraid to continue helping because of the military council’s heinous actions. Even helping each other is a country that is being arrested in Burma.
