This year, Indonesia is leading the ASEAN Summit. Even though only a year has passed, ASEAN’s efforts on the Myanmar issue are still the same. This year, Indonesia met with all organizations concerned with Myanmar and listened to their voices. What follows is that no one trusts the military council. It is ASEAN that has learned after three years that no one trusts the military council.
After this year, in 2024, Laos will become the rotating chairman. But this time, the 2023, 2024, and 2025 chairpersons decided that the three countries would jointly take responsibility for Myanmar affairs. They believe that if countries like Laos that are deaf to the military council become the chairman in turn, it may affect the unity of the ASEAN group. Even now, ASEAN is already divided on the issue of Myanmar. By making this decision, the chance of persuading the military council to come to their side is reduced if the ASEAN countries that are comfortable with them take turns chairing it.
