Commodity prices, which have been stable at high levels for a long time, are rising again this month. It is obvious that commodity prices have risen. The price of a cup of tea or a plate of rice has increased by two hundred or three hundred kyats. Some food items have increased by five hundred or one thousand kyats.
In the past, when the dollar rose, commodity prices followed suit. Now the dollar has not risen, but is falling. Last year, at this time, the dollar was worth more than six thousand kyats. Now it has fallen from about 4,500 to about 4,300. The military commission is also selling dollars continuously. Due to the irregular economy of Myanmar, although the dollar is falling, commodity prices are rising. Although commodity prices are rising, the income of the lower classes has not increased as usual. It is hard to imagine how the lower classes are struggling to survive in this situation.
