More than 2.7 million people in Myanmar’s economic capital, Yangon, are living in poverty due to the aftermath of the 2021 military coup, which has led to widespread conflict and economic decline, according to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The report said that in 2017, only 10 percent of Yangon’s population was poor, but this number is expected to rise to 43 percent by 2023. Yangon’s population is estimated at 6.2 million, and about 2.7 million people are already living below the poverty line, meaning almost half of Yangon’s population is already poor. Poverty is also increasing in the outskirts of Yangon as people fleeing political instability and war to settle in the city. In the past, people moved to the big cities for better living conditions and better lives, but now many people have abandoned everything and are moving to their original homes because they are struggling to survive in their original homes. This is the problem that people are currently facing.
