With the earthquake having hit five days ago, there is little chance of finding survivors among the trapped people. The military council has done nothing to help with rescue efforts, relying instead on international teams. These teams have only been able to carry out rescue operations in the heavily damaged cities of Mandalay, Sagaing and Nay Pyi Taw, and have not been able to reach other smaller cities.
People across the country are also helping the affected areas. But the people themselves are struggling economically, and it is not enough. Analysts estimate that the earthquake will cost the country 70 percent of its GDP and will take decades to rebuild.
