The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) will stop providing life-saving food assistance to more than a million people in Myanmar from April due to a severe funding shortfall. The agency said it would only be able to provide food to about 35,000 people, including children under five, pregnant and lactating mothers and people with disabilities, unless new funding is secured. The reason for the severe funding shortfall was not given, but it is believed to be due to the Trump administration’s cuts to international aid. The Trump administration’s actions come one after another. Rakhine State is among the most affected areas by the suspension of WFP assistance. Rohingya and some Rakhine people in Rakhine State rely heavily on this aid to survive. A million people are no small number. The WFP also provides rice bags to poor people living in the suburbs of major cities from time to time. Due to these circumstances, that support will no longer be available.
