The AA has begun its attack on Kyaukphyu, the city where the Chinese deep-sea port and natural gas pipeline originate. Kyaukphyu is also home to the military council’s headquarters at the Thanyawaddy Naval Base. It was thought that the AA would not attack because of Chinese investment, but now the offensive has begun. Last week, the AA began attacking the capital Sittwe. So there is no city in Rakhine State that is not in conflict. It will be interesting to see what strategies the AA will use to capture Kyaukphyu and Sittwe.
