Porter-stealing is really happening in Yangon. There are reports of porters being caught at night in many townships in Yangon. Last night, more than 30 young men were arrested in Thaketa Township while walking home from work at night. At around 8 pm, soldiers and policemen in private cars pulled middle-aged men into their cars and dragged them away. The arrests were not only on the main roads but also in the streets of neighborhoods and in dark places. In some places, young men were also caught walking on the streets near their homes at night. Missing person reports have also been popping up on social media these days. Most of the missing people are young people.
Since porter-stealing is really happening, there are not many pedestrians on the main roads after 8 pm. Even street vendors who sell at night close their shops by 8 pm. After sunset in Yangon, the situation has become unsafe for young people.
