China has appointed a new special representative for Myanmar. The candidate who could not be persuaded to take over the military council was removed from office and appointed a new one just a few days ago. The new special representative arrived in Burma to meet with the military council. Before coming to Burma, they have met with the northern EAO groups. The EAOs said it was an introductory meeting, but after that there were deep discussions. It cannot be a coincidence that the new Chinese representative arrived in Burma right after the US NDAA came out. They will work with the military council to find ways to counter the NDAA. They will ask to see Daw Aung San Suu Kyi who has been arrested. But lately, China and the military council have become less close, so I don’t think their plans will succeed.
