Right after the UN’s resolution on Myanmar came out, Thailand invited ASEAN countries, including the Military Council, to hold an informal meeting on Myanmar. Because the Foreign Minister of the Military Council was invited to the meeting, ASEAN’s leading countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore did not attend. Only the rest of the communist and authoritarian countries attended. Although it was a foreign ministerial level meeting, it was done in a restaurant. No results came out.
In any case, Thailand’s action of inviting a military council and holding a parallel meeting against the resolutions of the ASEAN meeting is quite disappointing. It is very obvious that Thailand wants to favor the terrorist military council that has been rejected. Thailand’s actions are blind to the wishes and difficulties of the Burmese people, and it is dividing ASEAN into two. For the people of Burma, Thailand is a useless neighbor after China.
