A neighborhood watchman was reportedly tortured to death by the military regime’s troops in Yangon’s Insein Township on Monday morning.

Ko Kyaw Lwin Htwe, 39, a resident of Insein’s Aung San neighborhood, went missing for hours about 5 a.m. on Monday after he chased a suspicious vehicle in the ward.

According to some witnesses, Ko Kyaw Lwin Htwe was taken by the junta’s troops into the compound of No. 3 Basic Education High School in Aung San ward where several dozens of soldiers have been deployed the past two weeks.

Later, he was sent to Hlaing Thayar Township Hospital by the troops via the ambulance of a social organization. The troops maintained that the man had been seriously injured in a motorcycle accident, according to his family members who cited the social organization.

After searching for him in the area, family members finally found his body at Hlaing Tharyar Hospital Monday morning. He had sustained serious injuries to the head and bruising.

The wife of Ko Kyaw Lwin Htwe told The Irrawaddy that she believes her husband was murdered by the junta’s troops.

She said the injuries were quite different from those that would have been sustained in any alleged accident. She said the cuts and abrasions were not like those normally caused by a motorcycle accident. Instead, his both eyes were badly bruised and there were bruises under his arm.

Meanwhile, his motorcycle was largely intact.

“It makes me deeply hurt that my husband died after being tortured. Now, I have no more tears to cry for him,” she said.

The family had to hold a funeral for Ko Kyaw Liwn Htwe in a hurry because regime troops are searching for them in the ward.

Ko Kyaw Lwin Htwe is survived by two daughters, a 13-year-old and a 6-year-old, in addition to his wife.

As of Monday, about 710 people including National League for Democracy members, anti-regime protesters, bystanders and residents have been killed by the military regime’s forces during their arrests, raids and crackdown against the protests, according to Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP).
