A month after the promulgation of the conscription law, groups under the military council in major cities have begun to enumerate those of age applicable to the conscription law. Men between the ages of 18 and 35 are being counted. In Yangon, all the townships are not being listed uniformly, but the district administration heads are collecting according to their own plans. In some neighborhoods, the neighborhood office called a meeting and forced everyone to attend. Villages around Nay Pyi Taw, which is the military administrative capital, are known to have already voted to gather new soldiers.
The effects of the law are quickly reaching inner-city neighborhoods, leaving many young people terrified. Most still don’t know what to do. At Yangon International Airport, there are more people departing from abroad than ever before. Those who can afford it avoid going abroad, but those who can’t afford it are still lost. Those who avoid going abroad can’t stay abroad for the rest of their lives. It’s difficult situation in here to survive.
